Early Life
Adah Sharma was born in Mumbai to S. L. Sharma, a captain in the Indian Merchant Navy who passed away in 2014, and Sheila Sharma, an Indian classical dancer and mallakhamba yoga practitioner. She attended Auxilium Convent High School in Bandra, Mumbai, where she first discovered her passion for acting during her tenth grade. Despite her desire to start acting immediately, her parents encouraged her to complete her schooling. After finishing her twelfth grade, Sharma chose to forego further formal education to pursue her acting career.
In addition to acting, Sharma is an accomplished gymnast and began dancing at the age of three. She graduated in Kathak from the Natraj Gopi Krishna Kathak Dance Academy in Mumbai and also expanded her dance repertoire by studying salsa, jazz, ballet, and belly dancing during a four-month program in the United States. She is skilled in Silambam, an Indian martial art that involves weapon training.
Growing up in Mumbai, Sharma is fluent in both Marathi and Hindi. Her extensive training in various forms of dance and martial arts highlights her commitment to developing her diverse artistic skills.
Career
Adah Sharma’s entry into the film industry was marked by numerous auditions, during which she faced setbacks, often due to her curly hair or perceived youthfulness. Her major breakthrough came with the 2009 Hindi horror film 1920, where she starred in the lead female role opposite Rajneesh Duggal. Her portrayal of a possessed woman in this film earned her significant acclaim and was a commercial success, signaling director Vikram Bhatt’s return to successful ventures.
Following the success of 1920, Sharma encountered some challenges. Her next film, Phhir (2011), a horror sequel, was poorly received and did not perform well at the box office. Similarly, Hum Hai Raahi Car Ke (2013), a romantic comedy, failed to make a significant impact both critically and financially.
Sharma’s career saw a turnaround in 2014 with two notable releases. She appeared in the Telugu romance Heart Attack and the Hindi film Hasee Toh Phasee, where she played a supporting role. Both films achieved commercial success, with Hasee Toh Phasee becoming one of the top-grossing Hindi films of the year.
Her subsequent projects included the Telugu family drama S/O Satyamurthy and the Kannada action thriller Rana Vikrama. Both films performed well at the box office, despite receiving mixed reviews. Sharma also received praise for her role in the Telugu romantic comedy Subramanyam for Sale.
In 2016, Sharma’s career continued to flourish with several film releases. She starred in the Telugu romantic comedy Garam, the critically acclaimed thriller Kshanam, and her debut Tamil film Idhu Namma Aalu. Her performance in these films, particularly her dance sequences and chemistry with Silambarasan in Idhu Namma Aalu, was well-received. She also played the female lead in the action thriller Commando 2.
Expanding her repertoire, Sharma took on the role of a transgender woman in the MX Player web series Pati Patni Aur Panga (2020). Her career reached new heights in 2023 with her portrayal of Shalini Unnikrishnan / Fathima Ba in The Kerala Story. The film, which explored radicalization and conversion to Islam, became one of the year’s highest-grossing films.
Following this success, Sharma announced her involvement in an international film project, where she will play a female superhero in an action movie. In 2024, she appeared in Bastar: The Naxal Story and The Game Of Girgit, further expanding her diverse filmography.
