Amruta Khanvilkar, born on November 23, 1984, in Mumbai, comes from a Marathi family. Her parents, Ajit and Gauri Khanvilkar, raised her along with her younger sister, Aditi, who chose a career as an air hostess. Growing up in a culturally rich environment, Amruta developed a deep connection with her roots and an early interest in the performing arts.

In 1993, following the Mumbai attacks, her family made the decision to move to Pune in search of a safer and more stable environment. This shift marked a significant change in Amruta’s life. In Pune, she continued her education, attending Karnataka High School, where she began to hone her skills and explore her interests further. Her academic journey led her to Marathwada Mitra Mandal College of Commerce, where she completed her graduation.

Career

Amruta Khanvilkar embarked on her journey into the entertainment industry in 2004 when she participated as a contestant on Zee Cine Star ki Khoj, one of the earliest reality shows on Indian television. This platform gave her the initial exposure she needed to make her mark. In the same year, she co-starred in the Hindi short film Saanjh. The film went on to win the National Film Award for Best Non-Feature Film on Family Welfare, marking a successful beginning to her career.

Khanvilkar’s career gained momentum in 2005 when she appeared on popular Hindi television shows such as A.D.A. and Time Bomb 9/11. The following year, she made her debut in Marathi cinema with the comedy film Golmaal. Her performance alongside Bharat Jadhav and Jitendra Joshi was well-received, earning her positive reviews and establishing her as a promising talent in the Marathi film industry.

In 2007, Amruta ventured into Hindi cinema with the film Mumbai Salsa and also had a small role in Milan Luthria’s Hattrick. Her versatility in acting began to show, and the same year, she starred in the successful Marathi film Saade Maade Teen, a remake of the classic Hindi film Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi. Her portrayal in the movie was highly praised, contributing to its box office success.

In 2008, Amruta collaborated with renowned director Ram Gopal Varma on two films: Contract and Phoonk. While Contract received mixed reviews, Phoonk turned out to be a box office hit, further cementing her place in the industry.

The year 2009 saw her playing a pivotal role in the big-budget Marathi suspense thriller Gaiir. The film, which centered around a newly married couple, was both a critical and commercial success, with Amruta’s performance receiving widespread acclaim.

A turning point in her career came in 2010 when she gained significant popularity for her Lavani performance in the song Wajale Ki Bara from Ravi Jadhav’s film Natarang. Her impressive cameo in the song not only won her widespread recognition but also solidified her status as a notable performer in the Marathi film industry.

Continuing her successful streak, Amruta reprised her role in Phoonk 2 in 2010 and displayed her acting range in different genres. The following year, she portrayed a Marathi teacher in Shala, a film based on Milind Bokil’s novel. The film won the Silver Lotus Award at the 59th National Film Awards, further adding to her list of accomplishments.

In 2011, Amruta starred in commercially successful Marathi films like Arjun and Zhakaas. Her performance in Zhakaas earned her the Favourite Actress award at the Maharashtracha Favourite Kon Awards.

In 2012, she appeared in Aditya Sarpotdar’s musical Satrangi Re and played a dance therapist in Aayna Ka Bayna, a musical drama. Her outstanding performance in Aayna Ka Bayna earned her the Best Actress award at the CineRockom International Film Festival.

Amruta made a special appearance in the song Dhoka Dhoka from the Hindi film Himmatwala in 2013. In 2015, after a year’s absence, she returned to the big screen with five releases, including the Marathi superhero film Baji and the Marathi remake of Hemlock Society, titled Welcome Zindagi. Her role in Welcome Zindagi as an independent woman navigating life’s challenges was highly appreciated.

Amruta’s return to Hindi projects in 2018 was marked by her role in Meghna Gulzar’s Raazi, where she played Munira, the widowed sister-in-law of Alia Bhatt’s character. She also appeared in the action thriller Satyameva Jayate alongside Manoj Bajpayee and made her digital debut in the web series Damaged, portraying the character Lovina Birdie.

In 2019, Amruta made her Marathi television debut with the lead role in Jeevlaga, exploring complex relationship dynamics. Her success continued in 2020 with a notable role in Mohit Suri’s action thriller Malang.

In 2021, Amruta starred in the Marathi drama Well Done Baby. The following year, she played the role of Manasi in Sachin Kundalkar’s Pondicherry and secured her first titular role in Prasad Oak’s Marathi musical love drama Chandramukhi. Her impressive portrayal of Sonabai in the historical action film Har Har Mahadev received positive reviews.

Amruta continued her successful run with Autograph – Ek Japun Thevavi Ashi Lovestory, directed by Satish Rajwade, and in 2024, she appeared in Disney+ Hotstar’s series Lootere, starring alongside Vivek Gomber and others.
