Early Life
Akshay Kumar, born in Old Delhi, India, to Hari Om Bhatia and Aruna Bhatia, hails from a Punjabi Hindu family. His father served in the army, and Kumar spent his early years in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk, where he developed a strong interest in sports. The family later moved to Bombay (now Mumbai) when his father transitioned to work with UNICEF.
In Bombay, Kumar grew up in the Koliwada area, a Punjabi community in Central Bombay. Although he enrolled in Guru Nanak Khalsa College for higher education, he left to pursue his true passion for martial arts. With his father’s support, Kumar saved up and went to Thailand, where he lived for five years and mastered Thai Boxing.
After earning a black belt in Taekwondo in India, Kumar furthered his martial arts education in Bangkok, learning Muay Thai. He worked various jobs to support himself, including as a chef and waiter. Upon returning to Bombay, he briefly joined the family business and taught martial arts. However, his career path took a turn when he stumbled into the world of modeling. Starting as a model and background dancer in films, Kumar’s first brush with acting came with a small role as a Karate instructor in the film “Aaj.”
Adopting the name Akshay Kumar, he made a significant shift to acting after securing a lead role in the movie “Deedar,” produced by Pramod Chakravarthy. This role marked the beginning of his journey in Indian cinema.
Kumar’s career is a testament to his dedication and versatility, transitioning from martial arts to modeling and finally to becoming a prominent actor in Bollywood. His diverse experiences and relentless pursuit of his passion have shaped him into one of the industry’s most enduring stars.
