Early Life
Alia Bhatt was born on March 15, 1993, in India, into the prominent Bhatt family. Her parents are Mahesh Bhatt, a renowned Indian film director, and Soni Razdan, a British actress with Kashmiri Pandit and British German ancestry. Mahesh Bhatt is of Gujarati descent. Despite her familial ties to the film industry, Alia Bhatt’s upbringing was relatively modest. She has an elder sister named Shaheen and two half-siblings, Pooja and Rahul Bhatt. Her extended family includes her paternal cousins, actor Emraan Hashmi and director Mohit Suri, and her uncle, producer Mukesh Bhatt. Alia holds British citizenship.
Alia attended Jamnabai Narsee School in Mumbai but decided to leave her twelfth-grade studies to pursue a career in acting. From a young age, she was fascinated by the world of performance. Her first exposure to acting came at the age of five when she appeared in her father’s film “Sangharsh” (1999), portraying a younger version of Preity Zinta’s character. Although her family’s background could have afforded her certain privileges, Alia maintains that her childhood was grounded, largely due to her mother, Soni Razdan, who played a significant role in her upbringing.
Alia’s relationship with her father during her early years was not particularly close, as Mahesh Bhatt was often busy with his career, leaving Soni Razdan to take on much of the parental responsibilities. This dynamic gave Alia a sense of normalcy and independence, despite her famous lineage. Her interest in the arts was evident from an early age. She began dance lessons at Shiamak Davar’s institute, nurturing her passion for performing arts.
At the age of nine, Alia auditioned for a role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Black” (2005), though she did not secure the part. Later, when she was twelve, Bhansali considered casting her opposite Ranbir Kapoor in the film “Balika Vadhu.” Unfortunately, this project never came to fruition. These early experiences, however, did not deter her determination to succeed in the film industry.
Despite her family’s significant presence in Bollywood, Alia carved her path through hard work and dedication. Her early setbacks only fueled her ambition, and she eventually made her successful debut in Karan Johar’s “Student of the Year” (2012). This marked the beginning of her rise to stardom, leading to a series of critically acclaimed performances and establishing her as one of the leading actresses in contemporary Indian cinema. Alia Bhatt’s journey reflects her resilience and passion, showcasing that her success is a result of her talent and perseverance rather than her family name alone.
Career
Alia Bhatt’s Bollywood journey began with her debut in “Student of the Year” (2012), directed by Karan Johar. She was selected from 500 girls for the role, with the condition to lose 16 kg in three months. This film marked her entry into the industry, but she sought more substantial roles following the mixed critical reception.
Her breakthrough came with Imtiaz Ali’s “Highway” (2014), where she played a young woman developing Stockholm syndrome after being abducted. Despite the film’s commercial underperformance, Alia’s performance earned her the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress. She continued her successful partnership with Dharma Productions, starring in romantic films like “2 States” and “Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania” in 2014, both of which were well-received.
In 2015, Alia reunited with Vikas Bahl for “Shaandaar,” a commercial failure. However, she bounced back in 2016 with critically acclaimed roles in “Kapoor & Sons” and “Udta Punjab.” The latter, addressing substance abuse, showcased her versatility and earned her widespread praise.
Alia’s career soared with “Raazi” (2018), a spy thriller set during the 1971 Indo-Pak War. The film became one of the highest-grossing female-led Hindi films, solidifying her status as a leading actress. Her portrayal of the protagonist earned her a second Best Actress Filmfare Award.
In 2019, Alia launched her production company, Eternal Sunshine Productions, and starred in the musical “Gully Boy,” inspired by street rappers. Her career continued to flourish with roles in films like “Kalank” (2019), “Sadak 2” (2020), and “Gangubai Kathiawadi” (2022). “Gangubai Kathiawadi” received widespread acclaim, earning her the National Film Award for Best Actress.
In 2022, Alia ventured into Telugu cinema with “RRR” and appeared in the Netflix film “Darlings.” She concluded the year with “Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva,” which became the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2022.
Her success continued in 2023 with “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,” earning her a fifth Best Actress Filmfare Award. Alia made her American cinema debut with “Heart of Stone.” In addition to acting, she expanded her role in the industry by venturing into production.
