Early Life
Lance Reddick was born on June 7, 1962, in Baltimore, Maryland, where he spent his formative years. Raised in a middle-class family, he developed a passion for music and the arts at a young age. His father was a public defender, and education was highly valued in his household. Reddick attended Friends School of Baltimore, a private Quaker school, where he was exposed to a strong academic and creative environment.
He initially pursued a career in music, studying classical composition at the prestigious Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester. His early ambition was to become a professional musician, but while working toward that goal, he found himself drawn to acting. To further refine his skills, he enrolled at the Yale School of Drama, one of the most esteemed acting programs in the country. Reddick graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in 1994, marking the beginning of his journey into the world of acting.
His early experiences in Baltimore and at Yale helped shape his disciplined and intense approach to performance, qualities that would later become his trademarks in both television and film.
Career
Lance Reddick gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Cedric Daniels in HBO’s The Wire. Interestingly, he had also auditioned for the roles of Bubbles and Bunk Moreland before being cast as Daniels. In 2008, Reddick joined the cast of ABC’s series Lost, where he played Matthew Abaddon, an employee of Charles Widmore, across multiple episodes. This made him the third of five actors from the HBO series Oz to star in Lost. Producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse had originally considered him for the role of Mr. Eko, but due to his commitment to The Wire, the role went to another actor.
In 2007, Reddick showcased his musical talents by releasing his debut album, Contemplations & Remembrances. In early 2008, he landed a significant role in the pilot for Fringe, where he played Phillip Broyles, the head of an FBI unit that investigates paranormal phenomena. Despite being a regular on Fringe, Reddick was able to make occasional appearances on Lost during the 2008-2009 television season. His character in Fringe was described as a “hard-ass” but ultimately a good guy. This series, like Lost, was co-created by J.J. Abrams.
In 2013, Reddick appeared in the action-thriller White House Down and took part in the YouTube web series DR0NE, where he also served as a co-producer. The following year, he portrayed Charon, the concierge in John Wick, a role he reprised in all three sequels. In 2021, it was confirmed that he would return as Charon for John Wick: Chapter 4.
Reddick also lent his voice to several video game characters, including Commander Zavala in Destiny and Destiny 2 and Sylens in Horizon Zero Dawn and its sequel, Horizon Forbidden West. In 2014, he joined the cast of Amazon Prime’s Bosch, playing Chief Irvin Irving. He drew comparisons between his various police roles, stating that Daniels from The Wire was “a cop at heart”, Broyles from Fringe was “a soldier”, and Irving from Bosch was “the quintessential politician.”
Reddick also became a spokesperson in television commercials for Cree LED Bulbs. In 2016, he was cast in the post-apocalyptic horror film The Domestics, which was released in 2018. He also appeared in the 2018 horror-thriller Monster Party. His role as Albert Wesker and his clones in the Netflix adaptation of Resident Evil in 2022 showcased his versatility once again. Additionally, he voiced Hellboy in the video game Hellboy Web of Wyrd, which was released posthumously.
Reddick’s final posthumous role was as Zeus in Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians, the live-action adaptation of the popular book series.
