Early Life
Neeti Mohan, born in Delhi, is the eldest daughter of Brij Mohan Sharma, a government officer, and Kusum, a homemaker. She has three younger sisters: Shakti, Mukti, and Kriti Mohan. Neeti’s early musical education began at Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, where she nurtured her singing talent while also participating in dramatics and dancing, treating singing as a serious hobby.
During her school years, Neeti was a dedicated member of her school band and took part in the Delhi Republic Day parade for five consecutive years. Her father, Brij Mohan Sharma, encouraged her to engage in various extracurricular activities, including singing, dancing, and theater. Neeti’s efforts were recognized when she was named the best cadet in the National Cadet Corps (NCC) of India, representing the country in the Youth Exchange Programme.
Neeti continued her formal music education at Bhatkhande Music Institute and further honed her skills under Rajashree Pathak in Mumbai for five years. Additionally, she trained in Bharata Natyam and Kathak with her sisters under the guidance of Ashley Lobo and later worked as a dance instructor. Neeti also holds a degree in philosophy from Miranda House, University of Delhi.
In 2003, Neeti’s musical journey took a significant turn when she won Channel V’s reality show Popstars, becoming a member of the pop group Aasma. This victory provided her with the opportunity to perform alongside Bryan Adams. Her talent was noticed by Deepak Gattani, A. R. Rahman’s concert tours manager, who suggested her for a supporting role in Imtiaz Ali’s film “Socha Na Tha” (2005). In 2009, Neeti joined the Star Plus show “Music Ka Maha Muqqabla,” where she was part of the winning team “Shankar’s Rockstars.”
Neeti Mohan got married to actor Nihaar Pandya on 15th February 2019. The couple announced their first pregnancy on their second wedding anniversary in 2021. In an interview, Neeti recounted how A. R. Rahman discovered her. Her sister Shakti was performing as a dancer at a Rahman show in 2006, and after Neeti expressed her desire to perform with Rahman, she was given the opportunity six months later. This was facilitated by a chance meeting with Rahman’s manager, leading to Neeti’s audition and selection for Rahman’s US tour in 2007.
Career
Neeti Mohan made her Bollywood debut with the song “Ishq Wala Love” from “Student of the Year” (2012), composed by Vishal–Shekhar. She followed this up with “Jiya Re” from “Jab Tak Hai Jaan,” composed by A. R. Rahman, which earned her widespread acclaim for her lively and refreshing voice. Both songs became chartbusters, leading to Neeti receiving the Filmfare R. D. Burman Award for New Music Talent.
In 2013, Neeti’s career continued to flourish with multiple successful projects. She collaborated with Ayushmann Khurrana on the Punjabi track “Saadi Galli Aaja” and performed “Kashmir Main Tu Kanyakumari” for the movie “Chennai Express.” She also recorded “Dil Kaagzi” and “Naina” for the films “Gippi” and “Gori Tere Pyaar Mein,” respectively, working again with Vishal–Shekhar. Additionally, she contributed to Raghav Sachar’s “Bittoo Sab Ki Lega” from “Bittoo Boss” and released her debut single, “Ja Ja,” which she composed and wrote herself.
In 2014, Neeti demonstrated her versatility with several successful songs. Her performance in “Tune Maari Entriyaan” from “Gunday,” alongside Bappi Lahiri, Vishal Dadlani, and KK, was both a critical and commercial hit. She also collaborated with Ankit Tiwari on “Aalif Se” and “Happy New Year,” both of which achieved commercial success.
In 2015, Neeti’s major release was “Bombay Velvet,” composed by Amit Trivedi, where she performed six jazz tracks, bringing the character Rosie to life. Her improvisation in “Mohabbat Buri Bimari” was particularly praised. She continued working with Trivedi in “Shaandaar,” contributing to songs like “Nazdeekiyaan” and “Senti Wali Mental.”
Over the years, Neeti collaborated with various composers and delivered hit songs such as “Sau Aasmaan” from “Baar Baar Dekho,” earning another Filmfare nomination. She also worked with Pritam and Rochak Kohli on albums for films like “Jab Harry Met Sejal” and “Lucknow Central.” In 2019, she released her single “Kithe Reh Gaya” and contributed to the soundtracks of “Bharat” and “Kalank.”
Beyond film music, Neeti ventured into television, serving as a coach on “The Voice India Kids” and “The Voice.” She continued to release singles and collaborations and even explored voice acting, dubbing Rapunzel in the Hindi version of “Tangled: Before Ever After.” Neeti Mohan’s diverse talents and dedication have firmly established her as a leading voice in the Indian music industry.
