Early Life
Priyanka Chopra, born on July 18, 1982, in Jamshedpur, Bihar (now Jharkhand), comes from a family with a strong medical background. Her parents, Ashok and Madhu Chopra, both served as doctors in the Indian Army. Her father was from Ambala, Punjab, while her mother hailed from Jharkhand. Priyanka’s maternal grandparents were involved in politics, with her grandfather being a former Congress member and her grandmother a former member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly.
Growing up with a younger brother, Siddharth, Priyanka’s childhood was marked by frequent relocations due to her parents’ military careers. She attended various schools in cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, Ambala, Ladakh, Lucknow, Bareilly, and Pune. This exposure to different cultures helped shape her adaptable and resilient personality.
At the age of 13, Priyanka moved to the United States to further her education. She lived with her aunt and attended schools in Newton, Massachusetts, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. During this time, she participated in theatre and studied Western classical music, despite facing racial bullying.
After three years in the U.S., Priyanka returned to India and completed her high school education at the Army Public School in Bareilly. Her involvement in local beauty pageants, such as winning the May Queen title, led her mother to enter her in the Femina Miss India contest in 2000. Priyanka finished as the first runner-up and was crowned Femina Miss India World.
In 2000, Priyanka went on to win the Miss World pageant, becoming the fifth Indian woman to achieve this honor. This victory opened doors to a career in the film industry. Despite facing personal challenges, including depression following a nasal surgery in 2001, Priyanka overcame these obstacles through subsequent corrective surgeries, regaining her confidence and embarking on a successful acting career.
Career
Unfortunately, due to conflicting schedules and other commitments, the project fell through. She eventually made her screen debut in the 2002 Tamil film “Thamizhan” opposite Vijay. The film was well-received for its wit and dialogue, although Chopra’s role offered limited scope for acting.
In 2003, Chopra entered Bollywood with “The Hero: Love Story of a Spy,” starring alongside Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta. Set against the backdrop of the Indian Army in Kashmir, the film was commercially successful despite mixed reviews. Following this, she starred in “Andaaz,” which was a box-office hit and earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.
The year 2004 saw a series of box office disappointments for Chopra with films like “Plan,” “Kismat,” and “Asambhav,” where she was often cast for her “glamour quotient” in unremarkable roles. However, she bounced back with the success of “Mujhse Shaadi Karogi,” co-starring Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar. Her role in “Aitraaz” as an antagonist brought her critical acclaim, a Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role, and a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
From 2005 to 2006, Chopra’s career trajectory improved. While films like “Blackmail” and “Karam” received mixed reactions, she earned praise for her performance in “Waqt: The Race Against Time.” Her versatility shone through in films like “Yakeen,” “Barsaat,” and “Bluffmaster!,” which brought her recognition and box office success.
In 2006, Chopra starred in the blockbuster “Krrish” alongside Hrithik Roshan, solidifying her status in the industry. However, films like “Aap Ki Khatir” and “Drona” received mixed to negative reviews.
Chopra’s career faced setbacks in 2007 with “Salaam-e-Ishq: A Tribute to Love” and “Big Brother” failing at the box office. In 2008, “Love Story 2050” and “God Tussi Great Ho” were poorly received, and “Drona” marked her sixth consecutive box-office failure. The turning point came with Madhur Bhandarkar’s “Fashion” in 2008. Her portrayal of an ambitious supermodel earned her critical acclaim and numerous awards, including the National Film Award for Best Actress.
Chopra ended 2008 with the financial success of “Dostana.” Her performances in both “Fashion” and “Dostana” earned her the Stardust Award for Actor of the Year – Female. In retrospect, “Fashion” is considered a milestone in her career, paving the way for female-centric films in Bollywood. Despite initial setbacks, she emerged stronger, proving her acting prowess and versatility in various genres.
Priyanka Chopra’s film journey started with her debut in the Tamil film “Thamizhan” in 2002. Her Bollywood debut came in 2003 with “The Hero: Love Story of a Spy,” followed by “Andaaz,” which won her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. Despite setbacks in 2004 with films like “Plan,” “Kismat,” and “Asambhav,” she bounced back with “Mujhse Shaadi Karogi” and the critically acclaimed “Aitraaz.”
From 2005 to 2006, she starred in successful films like “Waqt: The Race Against Time,” “Bluffmaster!,” and “Krrish.” Her performance in “Fashion” (2008) earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress.
Between 2009 and 2011, Chopra continued to impress with roles in “Kaminey,” “What’s Your Raashee?,” and “7 Khoon Maaf,” earning awards and nominations. She also starred in the successful “Don 2.” From 2012 to 2014, she appeared in hits like “Agneepath,” “Barfi!,” and “Mary Kom,” for which she won the National Film Award for Best Actress.
Chopra expanded her career into American entertainment with the TV series “Quantico” (2015-2018), making her the first South Asian to headline an American network drama series.
In 2015, she starred in “Dil Dhadakne Do,” and 2016 marked her Hollywood debut with “Baywatch.” Despite mixed reviews, her performance was praised. From 2017 to 2019, Chopra appeared in films like “Jai Gangaajal,” “Isn’t It Romantic,” and “The Sky Is Pink,” which she also produced.
In 2023, she starred in Amazon Prime Video’s series “Citadel.” Priyanka continues to make strides in both Bollywood and Hollywood, with upcoming projects like “Heads of State” alongside John Cena and Idris Elba.
